Hello Newark Norsemen,

As I noted in my most recent post, I was planning on creating monthly themes to carry us throughout the school year. My intention with these are to allow the whole school to participate in social emotional learning in addition to the community. My goal is to help the student body at Newark to understand and apply healthy skills to cope with everyday life stressors. These skills are intended to improve relationships, communication, coping, and organization.

For the month of August we will be focusing on "adjustment". As we return to school and change our schedule, routine, and lifestyle, we need to be mindful of how this may impact our emotional wellness. Change is stressful, as a student and adult! However, it is inevitable. Change will always occur throughout our life and without the proper skills to work with and accept change, it can be hard to cope with no matter how old you are! Therefore, lets learn these skills young. So that when we face continuous change and stress, we can face it head on and be successful in our transitions.

What will we be learning about?
  • Time management
  • Coping skills
  • Stress management
  • Organizational skills
  • Sleep hygiene
  • Self-care
  • Mindfulness
  • School involvement
  • Self-advocacy
I have posted a bulletin board in the cafeteria full of resources and tips on how to cope with change and stress. I also provided a handout that can be completed by you, to personalize a plan of self-care. I put my example on the board if you need some ideas :) Please take a look at these when you have some time, take some handouts, and talk about them with your friends and family. And families, ask your students how their transition is going! Encourage them to ask questions and for help when needed. Talk about the skills we will be learning, you can even ask that they bring the resources home to share. I would LOVE that!

Be on the look out for next months theme. I'm thinking...... SELF-ACCEPTANCE SEPTEMBER. But for now, lets be present and in the moment on our adjustment back to school.

May the rest of your August be full of peace and gratitude!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Olin - School Social Worker
